ENT Association Gurgaon Conducts Noise Awareness Program for Gurgaon Traffic Police on World Hearing Day

Gurgaon, 8th March

In observance of World Hearing Day, the ENT Association Gurgaon, under the aegis of AOI Haryana, organized a Noise Awareness Program for Gurgaon traffic police personnel at the Traffic Police Headquarters, Sushant Lok.

Dr. Sarika Verma, Coordinator of the National Initiative for Safe Sound, highlighted the harmful effects of noise pollution, with a special emphasis on excessive honking and prolonged headphone use.

Prominent ENT specialists, including Dr. Bhushan Patil (Secretary, AOI Haryana), Dr. Vishal Kapoor (President, AOI Gurugram), Dr. Prashant Bharadwaj (Secretary, AOI Gurugram), Dr. NPS Verma (Senior ENT Surgeon), and Dr. Asha Baluja, shared valuable insights on hearing conservation and safe sound practices.

Indian cities are amongst the noisiest in the world and ENT doctors encourage behaviour modification at younger age through education and awareness about harmful effects of noise including irreversible hearing loss, tinnitus, anxiety, cardiac conditions and depression. When world over people can drive without using the horn, why dont we – insists Dr Sarika.

Through persistent efforts in awareness and enforcement of Noise Rules 2000, Indian cities should aim to conform to WHO guidelines of 55 dB ambient noise in daytime and 40 dB at night.

Indian roads and markets often have noise levels of 100 dB which is 1000 times the prescribed upper limit of sound exposure. This could explain why more than 50% of senior citizens in India have significant hearing loss.

As part of the initiative, 112 traffic police personnel underwent free hearing tests conducted by audiologists from HearClear, Audiospeech, and Meenakshi Hearing Aid Companies.

Dr Vishal expressed gratitude to DCP traffic Mr Vij for creating awareness amongst Gurgaon public with more than 2000 auto banners highlighting that honking serves no purpose.

The event aimed to raise awareness about noise-induced hearing loss and encourage better auditory health practices among those exposed to high noise levels daily.
